Happy last day of March! Seems to be going out like a lamb where I am.
Today my heart is breaking for my son as 55 of his friends from school are on there way to London for the first stop of their tour.  Ben is feeling better today which makes it harder, but he is far from recovered.  :(

On to the fun.  I have two cards to share with you today both in this weeks beautiful spring colourQ pallete.  My Make It Monday is the second card.

CAS-ual Fridays Challenge #45 - The Bold & The Beautiful

Down to the wire with this one, this weeks challenge was to create a card using BLACK with pastels.  Challenging you might think but dramatic results.

RS #4 & Twine Spiral Tutorial

Back after another exhausting few days of decisions.  Sadly today my husband and I went to Ben's school to withdraw him from the trip to Europe.  After speaking with our family doctor yesterday she feels he is not in a position to travel abroad.  He is still extremely tired and the mono is affecting his liver.  He would try to keep up, but 12 days of walking tours in England, France and Belgium could land him in the hospital overseas.  So home he stays.

Todays post has lots of photos.  I took some time in my studio today to get crafty.  I had a lot of requests for instructions on how I made the twine spiral that I made for last weeks Papertrey Blog Hop.  I decided to combine instructions along with a card for this weeks RetroSketch #4 using the same technique.  The tutorial is after my RetroSketch card.

Twine Spiral Tutorial

Here are my instructions for creating the twine spiral seen HERE and on the Retro Sketches card above. I by no means take credit for inventing this technique, these are the steps I was taught years ago using wool.  You can click on any picture for a larger image.

You need twine and a starburst or pinked edge die and twine.  Die cut a starburst mine is 1 3/4".

Start by taping the end of your twine on to the back of your spiral.  I just use scotch tape.

Wrap the twine around the front and slip it in a notch between two of the points and then count 10 spaces to your left and wrap the twine through the notch between 10 and 11 towards the back.

Wrap the twine back to the front and put it the notch to the right of where you started, see below.  Again wrap it up and in the notch  to the left of your first pass. 

Wrap back to the front and repeat the pattern of one to the right at the bottom and one to the left at the top.

Continue to do this until you have wrapped the entire die cut.  See below.  If you like you can continue around a second time to create a fuller and thicker twine wrapped die cut.

Leave enough to wrap behind, cut the twine and secure the other end with tape.

I don't have large spools of twine but I have different colours ranging from 5 yards to 25 yards.  I wrap all my twine around a die cut tag.  I cut an angled slit in the top right of my tag and I tuck the end in there.  Makes for easier storage and easier to use.

That's it, embellish as you wish and enjoy.

Papertrey Blog Hop - March 25

Wow, where did the month of March go?

Before I get down to business I am going to share my past few days with you.  My son Ben is 17, he is a good student, wants to be an architect unless he becomes a pro rugby player first.  Ben has been very sick the last few days.  Last month he received a call back to a second tryout for the Rugby Ontario 7s Summer Games.  This tryout takes place tomorrow.  Ben also will be leaving next Saturday for a 12 day trip to London, France and Belgium with his school for the 75th anniversary of the battle of Vimy Ridge (Canadian history).  It is midnight and we just got home from a day at the hospital with Ben, he has contracted Infectious Mono!  The doctor has pulled him from school this week for complete bed rest and has determined 3-4 weeks of recovery and absolutely no rugby.  Did I mention that he is currently taking a rugby course at school this term? No tryout tomorrow and maybe he won't be going to Europe. Long story short, we will just have to see what is going to happen.  :(

On to happy things it's time for another Papertrey Ink Blog Hop.  This month we had a photo to work with in lovely spring colours.  I chose to work with the colours and a new technique.  Typically I am not a big fan of yellow but I did have fun putting this one together.

colourQ challenge #129

Sorry about my absence this week.  I can say that exhaustion and a migraine have been the culprits. :(  I have my supplies sorted out on my desk for the projects I plan to create this weekend.

We have had extremely unusual weather here in Toronto this week.  The typical weather in March is around 10 C which is 50 F.  This week we have had weather hovering around 27 C which is 80 F. The sun has been shining and the sky has been blue.  Needless to say the neighbourhood have come alive--everyone is out of their house in shorts and T-shirts, the kids are playing in the streets, the high school left a message reminding parents about the dress code and the windows are open.  I looked out my kitchen window this morning to see the my Forsythia is in full yellow bloom and my crocus, daffodils and tulips are popping out of the ground!   That is the first sign of spring in Ontario.  Yay!

Okay moving on to my colourQ card for this week.  Arielle has offered us a beautiful palette of spring blues and purples.  My cardstock stash is primarily Papertrey so I translated the colours as Blueberry Sky, Aqua Mist, Lavender Moon and Autumn Rose.  I created a top fold card of Blueberry Sky.  Then I layered an embossed panel of white with an Aqua Mist scallop border created with my Hearts Border die.  For my focal point I pulled out one of my favourite stamps, the Mehndi Medallion, and stamped one in Autumn Rose and one in Aqua Mist.  Then I used my Beautiful Blooms 1 die to die cut one large and one medium of each stamped image.  Backed by an Autumn Rose scallop, adhered with foam dots for dimension, and topped with a Lavender Moon button. Throw on a sentiment and done.

colourQ challenge #128

Happy St. Patrick's Day!  I missed making a card for St. Patrick's Day which I planned to do all week, especially with a last name like McNeely.  My husbands Great Grandfather immigrated to Canada from Ireland in the 1800's.  He settled in a small town just outside of Ottawa called Carelton Place.  There is now a street named McNeely Avenue that was named after him.

This week's colourQ pallete was grey with a selection of greens. I chose Papertrey colours Soft Stone, Green Leaf, Spring Moss, Simply Chartreuse and Vintage Cream for my card.  I made my card base using Soft Stone, the I die cut my Parisian Lace doily in Green Leaf.  I just got this die and I am in love with it.   By using the co-ordinating punch out tool and the metal shim all the pieces popped out easily.  The level of detail on this die is incredible.  I was thrilled to be able to pull out my new Lighten Up stamp set and dies.  I hope you enjoy it.

Make It Monday #57: Colored Kissing

This weeks MIM is colored kissing by Heather Nichols.  A fantastic technique because the results are so interesting.  For me I had quite a time lining up my kissed stamps over the inital stamp.  So there a were a lot of redos, oh well lots of practice.  I chose to use the clouds from Up Up & Away for this technique. I stamped the clouds with Fresh Snow Ink on a Spring Rain card base and then kissed my stamps with Background Basics: Circles in Raspberry Fizz, Summer Sunrise and Pure Poppy.

RS#2 & My Scrappy Challenge

Kasia Curry is the RetroSketch host for this week.  I took the sketch and gave it a flip to the left and created this card using leftovers found on the table in my studio.  This is the second week that I have created a card from my scrappy leftovers.

Make it Monday #56: Die Cutting Partial Images

Betsy Veldman did this weeks Make It Monday video on making partial die cuts.  I decided to use the first Framed Out die to create a gatefold card.  Creating the die cut was fairly simple, I chose the method of rolling my die part way in and then back out.  I love Stampers Select cardstock, but as many of you know it isn't the easiest to fold or have it stay flat.  I ended up putting some removable tape behind the die cut to keep my card closed, it shouldn't interfere with it when given to the recipient.
