60 Years Ago Today

IMG_6730

Exactly 60 years ago today, October 15, 1954 Hurricane Hazel hit Toronto. We don`t see hurricanes here but Hazel collided with a cold front over Pennsylvania it caused her to turn northwest towards Canada. My mother`s sister, husband and three children lived along a creek near the Humber River. When a bridge upstream collapsed from debris and flood waters more than 14 homes, hers being one of them, were swept away and they were all killed. For my mom, this is one of the saddest days of the year. She feels like it did the day it happened. She has allowed my siblings and I to know her, through telling us stories of their childhood how they were the best of friends and telling me that I look just like my Aunt Joan. This card is for my mom.

  7. Oh, Tracey ... there is nothing as precious as family, and losing someone as close to her as a sister & her family, I'm sure your mom continues to feel such a great loss. I'm sure she will find comfort in your card and the thoughts & feelings behind it. I too wasn't around when Hurricane Hazel came through the north GTA area, but the event and those who's lives were affected/lost are remembered each year. All the best!

  22. Tracey, I had no idea about this tragic event - I never think of Canada when I think of hurricanes. I am so very sorry for your family's huge loss but I think it's so amazing of your mom to share her memories with you even when it must sometimes be painful to do so. Your card is gorgeous and so special. My heart goes out to all of you.
