The Ice Hut and Auction

Happy Saturday, this is one of two posts for today.  This one I wanted to keep on it's own. On Thursday we headed up to Sudbury to see Ben, Big Red, attend his presentation and ice hut auction! Thankfully we had sunny skies and dry roads heading up to Sudbury.  It can be kind of dicey going up north this time of year, the highways are more often snow covered than not, so it was a good day.

This is Big Red before going to auction--Ben was apparently wishing it was the playhouse he had as a child.  LOL

At the auction

The floor was painted by two of the group members. the large squid head comes off  to expose the hole in the ice to fish from.

Yes it was a cold as it looks up there, my fingertips were numb after taking a few photos!

The presentation:

The auction: the opening bid for Big Red was $1000.  It closed at $2100. Not bad for a 6 x 6 x 12 house with a hole in the floor and no heating.  LOL

Couldn't resist sharing a photo of Ben with his card making girlfriend (yay me), also one of the designer's of Big Red.

A really fun day 4 1/2 hour drive each way. Ben was originally coming home with us for his reading week. However, he really felt he needed to attend his Friday classes to make sure he had everything together for assignments to be done over his break. He is taking the bus home today.

Thanks for popping in.  Have a great weekend!

  4. Great post, thanks for sharing. The ice-hut is such a Canadian thing! Although it is pretty popular in Wisconsin, too, where we spent 10 years. If you ever get the chance to see the musical "Guys on Ice," take it!

  21. That was a fantastic story! The little ice house looks fabulous. What do people fish for when sitting on ice in these little huts? I assume FISH, but what type of fish? When I moved away to university as a 17 year old, I was five hours from home. I rarely got a visit, usually just dropped off at the beginning of the year and collected at the end - I used the bus in between for breaks. I bet Ben loves that you made the trip! Oh, and his girlfriend looks very cute - bonus that she is a card maker. ;-)
