Long day on Saturday but as always it was wonderful to go to the Open House at Laurentian and to bring Ben home. Today my post is not set up to brag, but to share with family and those of you who are interested what Ben has been up to
He is part of what will be the first graduating class of the School of Architecture at Laurentian University. The classroom is Francophone meaning that many of his lectures are delivered in french, the program has direct ties to the First Nations Aboriginal and much of the curriculum is focused on contemporary Aboriginal cultures. Many of his lectures and instruction are from First Nations Elders. This just puts perspective on why the students are creating the projects that they do.
A saw horse created without using any nails or screws. Proud mama moment that Ben's design received top mark in the class using square wooden pegs.
Canoe #1: Birch Bark (yes actually made of birch bark)
Canoe #2: Carbon Fibre (made of fabrics)
Students also each made their own paddles out of carbon fibre (seen in top photo)

So proud of both of them and all the hard work they put into building their canoes!
What I did notice is that Ben has lost weight and tired. Term 1 is over and he is off for three weeks--so time for some home cooking and sleep. Thanks for sticking through this.

Very interesting to read, I have family that moved from Finland to Canada before I was born so everything Canadian is of great interest, fabby photos and you must be so proud of your son, he's very talented.

Wow this is totally awesome and you must be so very proud of him. Aboriginal is this as in relation to the Aboriginal tribes of Australia? I ask as I have not heard of this outside of Aussie :)

Tracey, I love this update! Does it sound weird that I think that box horse is absolutely beautiful? I just love that it is made with square pegs and no nails. And I'm actually wishing I could touch it, it looks so smooth! Your Ben is very clever! You must be feeling very proud. :-)

ReplyDeleteWhat an intriguing program he's enrolled in; I'm impressed that his learning encompasses both Francophone and First Nations cultures. His accomplishments ARE impressive! I can imagine that as exhausting and demanding as the assignments are, he must feel a great sense of pride in what he's doing. Kudos to him. He and his girlfriend - yes, adorable. Thrilled for you that you have him tucked back at home; he'll love being spoiled and pampered during the break! You're an amazing mom - and thank you for sharing Ben with us. My message to him: rest, relax, rejuvenate and eat all the goodies your mom sets in front of you! Enjoy the 'love' in whatever form it is (cookies = love, by the way *grin*)

ReplyDeleteWow! You have every right to be so proud & brag a bit. What an accomplished young man. I must admit, I kind of know that proud Mom feeling. My son graduated 2 years ago with an architecture degree. I sometimes envied the great things they did in school, but not the long, hard hours he worked. I think some of your creativeness definitely rubbed off on your son. Have a wonderful holiday with him.
